My Story

I am currently pursuing the Coordinated BS/MS Program in Nutrition and Dietetics at Rowan University, where I’m excited to explore the connection between nutrition and the rich traditions of soul food across cultures. My passion for food and cooking started when I was about six years old, watching the Food Network and becoming fascinated by the different meals and stories behind them. Even at that age, I began to see how food brings people together and reflects culture, family, and identity. That early interest has grown into a deeper purpose—combining my love for food with a commitment to helping others live healthier, more meaningful lives. Through my education in nutrition and dietetics, I hope to honor those cultural traditions while promoting wellness and positive lifestyle choices.

WHY I CHOSE DIETETICS

It all began for me in 2022, the year my father passed away. His death was sudden and completely unexpected, leaving my family in shock and disbelief. One day he was here, and the next he was gone. In the midst of that grief, we learned that he had been living with a rare cholesterol condition that ultimately led to a fatal heart attack. That realization was both heartbreaking and eye-opening. It forced me to confront something I had never fully considered—my own health.

As I began to reflect, I discovered that I shared many of the same risk factors my father had. That truth was difficult to process. It wasn’t just about loss anymore—it was about legacy, and whether I was heading down the same path without even realizing it. That moment became a turning point in my life. It pushed me to stop putting off the things I had always felt called to pursue and to take control of my future in a meaningful way. Leading me to Rowan University and their Coordinated Program in Dietetics.

I chose dietetics because I want to understand nutrition on a deeper level—how it affects not only the body, but also the mind and emotional well-being. Through my own experience, I’ve come to see how powerful food can be, not just in preventing disease, but in shaping the way we feel, think, and live each day. What we eat is deeply personal. It connects to our culture, our memories, and our sense of comfort.

I’ve always believed that a great meal does more than nourish the body—it feeds the soul. Growing up around rich, comforting foods and diverse culinary traditions, I developed a deep appreciation for the role food plays in bringing people together. Now, I want to take that appreciation a step further by reimagining those same foods in ways that promote health without losing their meaning or flavor.

My goal is to make a lasting impact by helping others make informed, sustainable dietary choices. I want to meet people where they are, understand their stories, and empower them to live healthier lives without feeling like they have to give up the foods they love. By combining my passion for nutrition with my love for culinary arts, I hope to create a path that honors both health and heritage—one that inspires people to live fully, with energy, balance, and purpose.
